Safe Routes to SchoolsIn 2005, the US Department of Transportation and Congress established the Safe Routes to Schools program. Its purpose was to improve safety and increase the number of children who walk or bike to school. In 2009, Washington State formalized this program through state legislation and funding priorities.
The JNA supports Safe Routes to Schools initiatives by recommending school walk route safety improvements to the City of Kirkland and Lake Washington School District. Student walkers and bicyclists are considered when evaluating projects for submission to Kirkland’s Neighborhood Safety Program (NSP) annual grants. If you have a project idea that would improve student walk routes, please let us know! |
